How to get cigarette smoke smell out of a house
A heavy smoker moves out and the smell stays behind. It is one of the more common turnover problems a landlord runs into, and it has a real escalation path: clean, then deep clean, then paint, and only then a professional. Most cases never reach the end of that list.

What actually holds the smell
Smoke residue clings to soft, porous surfaces far more than to hard ones. Cleaning the hard surfaces first and stopping there is why a repaint so often turns out not to have been enough.
- Carpets and rugs, deep cleaned or, in a bad case, replaced
- Curtains and any soft window coverings, washed or replaced
- Upholstered furniture and mattresses, if they were left behind

Walls, filters and ventilation
Once the soft materials are dealt with, the residue on hard surfaces and circulating through the air is what is left.
Wash walls and ceilings with a mix of white vinegar and water, or a dedicated odour-neutralising cleaner. A residue this stubborn does not come off with a damp cloth alone.
Replace the ventilation or heating filters and have the ducts checked. Residue trapped there recirculates through the house every time the system runs, which is why a clean house can still smell of smoke.
Ventilate thoroughly, for longer than feels necessary, before judging whether the smell is actually gone.
What actually removes an odour
Absorb what is left, do not just mask it
Activated charcoal or baking soda, left out in the room for a few days, genuinely pulls an odour out of the air rather than covering it with a stronger one.
Bowls of activated charcoal or baking soda placed around the room, replaced every few days until the smell stops returning.
An air freshener is not the same thing
A spray or plug-in freshener layers a scent over the smell; it does not touch the residue producing it. The smell returns as soon as the fragrance fades, which is the tell that the source was never actually cleaned.

- Washing or replacing carpets, curtains and upholstery
- Washing walls and ceilings with white vinegar and water, or an odour-neutralising cleaner
- New ventilation or heating filters, and a check of the ducts
- Activated charcoal or baking soda, left out for a few days
- A stain-blocking primer before repainting, in a heavy case
Only hides it, or misses the source
- An air freshener spray or plug-in: it layers a scent over the smell
- An ordinary coat of paint over the residue
- A damp cloth alone on the walls
- Repainting while the carpets and curtains stay as they were

The escalation path, before assuming a full repaint
Most turnovers stop well before the end of this list. Working through it in order avoids paying for a repaint a deep clean would have solved, or under-treating a case that genuinely needs one.

1. Clean
Hard surfaces, filters, ventilation. Enough for a light case.

2. Deep clean
Soft materials washed or replaced, charcoal or baking soda left to absorb what remains.

3. Repaint with a stain-blocking primer
For a case heavy enough that the residue has worked into the paint itself, an ordinary coat of paint will not seal it.

Does an air freshener actually get rid of cigarette smoke smell?
No. An air freshener masks an odour with a stronger scent; it does not remove the residue sitting in carpets, curtains, upholstery and the ventilation system that is actually producing it. The smell comes back once the fragrance fades, because the source is still there.
How long does it take to get cigarette smoke smell out of a house?
A light case clears in a day or two of deep cleaning soft surfaces and ventilating. A heavier one, from years of smoking indoors, can need a full repaint with a stain-blocking primer, and the worst cases need professional ozone treatment, which itself takes the house being empty for a day or more.
Can cigarette smoke smell justify keeping part of a deposit?
It can be a legitimate cleaning or repair cost, depending on what the lease says and the deposit rules where the property is. What matters either way is documenting the condition at move-in and move-out, so the cost is backed by something more than a description.
Can you just paint over cigarette smoke smell?
